Department of Qur’ānic Recitation
The Department of Qur’ānic Recitation focuses on teaching the correct recitation of the Qur’ān. One key aspect of preserving the Qur’ān is maintaining its accurate pronunciation, which has been passed down since the time of the Prophet ﷺ. As the literal word of Allah, the Qur’ān serves as a source of guidance for mankind. Therefore, it must be recited, read, and written correctly to avoid misunderstandings. Allah commanded the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Qur’ān: “And recite the Qur’ān with measured recitation.” [Surah al-Muzammil, 73:4].
The preservation of the Qur’ān extends beyond the words themselves; it includes the correct movements of the tongue for each letter, as prescribed in tajweed. In this department, students will study the theory of Tajwīd through the famous al-Muqaddamah al-Jazariyyah, with a focus on its practical application.
The Qur’ān has traditionally been transmitted orally, with each generation learning from the one before, tracing back to the time of the Companions, who learned directly from the Prophet ﷺ. As ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said, “The recitation of the Qur’ān is a Sunnah. The later generations must learn from the earlier ones. Therefore, recite the Qur’ān only as you have been taught.”
The Qur’ān was revealed in various modes of recitation, which are also taught in this department as an elective. This includes an in-depth study of al-Shāṭabiyyah and recitation using al-Budūr al-Ẓāhirah as the primary text.
At Darul Qasim, students receive a comprehensive experience. In addition to improving their recitation, they learn how recitation is intrinsically connected to understanding the Qur’ān’s meaning. True connection with the Qur’ān’s message requires knowledge of Arabic, tafsir, and Qur’anic sciences. This holistic approach is unique to Darul Qasim and offers a broader perspective, addressing contemporary questions while affirming the authenticity, preservation, and historical roots of the Qur’ān.
