Within the Intermediate Islamic Studies program, students are exposed to an understanding of Islamic ethics through the textual study of hadith works like Imam al-Nawawī’s Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn. A more thorough exposure to al-mafhūm al-islāmī (Islamic content) is achieved through the study of Imam Tabrīzī’s hadith super-collection Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ in the final year of the undergraduate program.
The Department of Theology teaches ‘ilm uṣūl al-dīn (lit. the knowledge of the roots of the religion), also called al-Kalām (lit. the discourse), which is a discipline of learning by which one is able to establish religious truths with evidence and remove doubts from these truths.

The Humanities Department aims to give students the tools to understand and engage the Western academic tradition at an advanced level. Students are exposed to a variety of fields within the humanities, including history, philosophy, logic, and writing.
The Qurʾān and Sunnah were revealed and practiced, respectively, in the context of a real society that faced difficult challenges. These challenges were overcome, and a remarkable new civilization was born, because the early Muslims understood the relevance of the Qurʾān and Sunnah to the world around them. There are two essential tools that facilitate the acquisition of such understanding, the Arabic language and Islamic studies. A deep knowledge of Arabic is the means through which exegesis, close textual analysis, is possible. It is the key to understanding how the culture, sociology and philosophy of previous generations functioned in the light of the Qurʾān and Sunnah. Islamic studies includes such disciplines as ʿAqīdah, Islamic thought, and Fiqh: it is the means through which one gains access to the Qurʾān and the resulting spiritual connection to our Creator, a connection that is the surest path for happiness in this life and the next.
