Leadership in Action: A Muslim Theologian on the Future of AI in Medicine

On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Shaykh Amin Kholwadia—founder and president of both Darul Qasim and the Al Amin Ethics Institute—was featured as a global expert at the Chicago Muslim Medical Alliance (CMMA) Education Seminar, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Medical Specialities.

This gathering brought together leading voices in healthcare and technology—experts on AI and several high-ranking physicians, including a key sponsor who underwrote the entire event.

A Theological Lens on Artificial Intelligence

In his presentation, Islamic Perspective on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Medical Specialities, Shaykh Amin offered a rare and much-needed theological lens on the rapidly evolving world of AI. Speaking as a Muslim theologian, he positioned guidance (hidāyah) at the top of the epistemological prism, reframing how technological advancement should be viewed through the moral and ethical compass of Islam.

Crucially, Shaykh Amin reminded the audience that “the AI ship has already set sail.” We will not call it back—as a mercy for the Ummah, and in consideration of the psyche of the modern Muslim. However, he stressed that Muslims must learn to navigate what is good and what is harmful within it, and resist the temptation to accept it blindly as “progress” simply because it is new.

Islamic Epistemology: A Higher Framework

Shaykh Amin also underscored that Islamic epistemology is uniquely superior, because it grants access to forms of knowledge that are found only in waḥy (divine revelation)—knowledge no other framework possesses.

He emphasized that because waḥy is supra-rational, the base of a Muslim’s thinking must be rational. Only when the rational foundation is sound can the mind ascend toward what lies beyond it—the supra-rational truths of revelation. This, he explained, is what distinguishes Islamic thought from all other intellectual traditions and makes it capable of guiding humanity even in the face of powerful, disruptive technologies like AI.

His clear articulation of these philosophical underpinnings—and their implications for medical ethics—brought new light to a discussion often dominated solely by scientific and technical voices. Attendees praised his scholarship and depth, noting how seamlessly he bridged faith and futuristic innovation.

Impact Beyond the Podium

While his insights captivated the audience, what moved many most was the spiritual ripple it created: a highly influential physician in attendance expressed deep interest in embracing Islam after hearing Shaykh Amin speak. May Allah guide him and make it a reality. Āmīn.
