Darul Qasim Physicians: Bringing Islamic Civilizational Values to Mainstream America

We’re excited to share some powerful news that will reach many of you soon through other avenues. In collaboration with the Al-Amin Ethics legal cohort and Darul Qasim’s esteemed Darul Iftā’, the medical ethics cohort has teamed up with a formidable legal group, the Becket Fund for Religious Freedom, to help realize a small part of Shaykh Amin Kholwadia’s vision by engaging with the mainstream—enjoining the good and deterring evil.

Inspired by their Muslim upbringing and their ongoing coursework at the Al-Amin Ethics Institute under the guidance of Shaykh Amin — Dr. Akbar Ali, Dr. Asim Babar, Dr. Omar Hussain, and Dr. Umar Shakur sued the State of Illinois on 9/16/2026 over a new law that forces doctors to help terminally ill patients end their lives—in direct violation of their religious beliefs.

In Ali et al. v. Vohra et al., the plaintiffs are asking a federal court to immediately block the law and protect these doctors from significant fines and penalties for refusing to participate in assisted suicide or for telling a suffering patient that life is still worth living.

These physicians took an oath to first do no harm—and they hold a religious commitment to stand by their patients through natural death.
